You all know that am pretty jobless right now and they say an idle mind is a devil's workshop. So this devil here created something in her workshop - a FB page with all my cartoons made using BitStrips. The concept, idea and characterization behind each cartoon is solely mine.
I would have drawn the characters and the scene myself, but you wouldn't want to see them as sticks with heads right, so I used the web comic tool and I must say, it is fun.

You can find the page here at BEING SILLY.  Enjoy :)

P.S. : After seeing these cartoons, if you have a big fight at home, don't blame me because this is "Just for fun".
P.P.S : Thanks to my dear husband for being the "INSPIRATOR" :D

I feel empty today. I feel very restless. I can feel my thoughts tying me down. As I struggle to come in terms with the way I am feeling, I ask myself "Did I go wrong?".

The fear of going wrong has always been a constant fear for me. It pops up all the time like those fungi on a rotten piece of vegetable. So, am I the fungus or am I the vegetable? I am both. I fear and hence I am the fear I have. Confusing? You will get it in due course.
I am being very blunt today, am I not? It happens all the time when I am in a mood like this. But, today, I don't feel like saying a sorry for my bluntness. I want to be me and be in the mood I am in and express the mood I am in. For me, it is a bold step but I have got to be real. I have got to be me to be peaceful - to be peaceful with the world around me and most importantly, to be peaceful with myself.

I always fear losing myself to the intricacies of life. I fear that I will lose myself when I try pleasing others or stick to the image others have of me. It surely is not easy being yourself and being bold and being real in this world. But, there are exceptions - exceptions who require to be applauded.

Are you newly married? Is this the first time you have moved out of your country? Better still, are you a newly married woman who moved into an alien country to accompany your husband, leaving behind the comfort of your home, job, friends and your country? If yes, you might relate to this post. If not, you might know someone who might relate to this post.

Let me tell you the qualities that make me eligible for the title of “Being a new wife in Pardes”.

I am a new wife in Pardes because:
  • I moved to a different country after 3 months of marriage. Obvious first reason, isn’t it? And you thought this was going to be a laugh riot kind of a post? O_o  I thought you should have, by now, learnt to keep your “expectations from me” a little low. Oh, you mortal creatures, when will you learn from your mistakes, when? :p
  • I crib every other day about not being able to work due to Visa restrictions.
  • I come up with a hundred entrepreneurial ideas every day to fill my pockets here. Nothing workable though.
  • I spend half my time on FB and the other half on phone.
  • I google and try new recipes every other day and post the pictures on FB. I pity people on my friends list. Little secret, I wanted to post pictures of Dosa on FB and my husband mocked me. Let me tell you that it is difficult to make nice Dosas here. Due to the cold weather, the batter hardly ferments. Husband doesn’t understand my predicament.
  • I use the oven more than the stove.
  • I try my hand at creative art work and if successful, post it on FB. Mine are not worth posting, because, all I do is make tables out of the many cardboard boxes we have lying in the patio. See, I used the term patio instead of balcony. This proves I am turning into a NRI.
  • I look at the calories and ingredients before I cook anything. Yes, yes, I was checking for calories on the cumin packet the other day. Cumin yaar, apna jeera.
  • I try to lose the non-existent weight that I feel I have put on after coming here. I have lost two pounds. Yes, I used pounds instead of kilograms.
  • I buy more sweaters than I buy tops.
  • I exercise way more than I used to in India. I do Zumba and go for a 2.5 mile walk every day. Don’t ask me what is Zumba. I am yet to understand it myself. Did you notice? I used miles instead of kilometers.
  • I convert pounds to kilograms and miles to kilometers using Google.
  • I vacuum our house instead of sweeping and mopping it.
  • I listen to music at a very low volume so that I don’t disturb the unknown neighbours.
  • I cook every day starting with a prayer that the smoke alarm shouldn’t turn on when I give Vaggarne/Chaunk/Tadka to my Daal.
  • I go to the Indian stores and talk to the store guys with an accent.
  • I say sorry everytime some phoren guy/girl talks to me because I cannot understand what they are saying.
  • I have shower curtains and no window curtains at home.
  • I crib about not having door locks in our bedroom.
  • Every weekend, we go to a new place, spending a few dollars, to twist all the bones and muscles and nerves we have in our body. In short, we go for an adventure trip.
  • I post pictures of our trip, to some place we have been, on FB and wait to see how many likes and comments I get. Darn..I wasn’t really bothered when I was in India. Here, I have a lot of time to bother about a lot of silly things.
  • I listen to sounds coming from our neighbour’s bathroom.
  • I kill time posting something nonsensical on FB and Twitter.
  • I refresh my FB page a million times a day.
  • I buy those fruits with fancy names and then google as to how to eat them.
  • I convert dollars to rupees and crib about how expensive things are here.
  • I listen to patriotic songs when I miss home. Such a nautanki I am.
  • I watch every episode of every season of every soap opera ever made. Again, I didn’t use “serials”.
  • I watch Hindi/Kannada movies wherever I can find them.
  • I ask my husband for a new laptop, because, I am not happy with the three we have at home.
  • I smile at every person I find on road.
  • I look at our countrymen here with the same surprise that an earthling might have when he sees an alien.
  • I accompany my husband to all Sci-Fi movies, which I would have certainly not watched if I was in India. Yes, I also post a check-in on my FB page.
  • I write such nonsensical posts when I have nothing to do and that accounts to half of my day here when the patidev is at office.

Disclaimer : These are my thoughts. I have not copied or plagiarized, but, if you feel you have read it before, don’t blame me, because, all of us Desis in Videsh feel the same about certain things.

Crazy title? Not really, there are so many underlying emotions associated with "milk". Sic sic.
Err..I will stop being a shitty piece of melodramatic fur ball that I am and tell you why I hate milk ! Wait a minute, from the title, did you by any chance think that I love milk? No, not even in my dreams can I love milk.  And when I say milk, I refer to the white, frothy, plain, liquid source of the so called "very important calcium".

It all started 27 years ago, (I will be 27 this August, wish me "Happy B'day", ok? *Rolls her eyes and thinks how much more lame can she get*) , when I was a baby. I don't remember if I hated milk then but my mommy tells me that I was a terror to be breastfed. I realise it is such a pain for the small babies to drink the same plain milk for months together. I would have preferred atleast flavored milk, or say, a pizza to munch along with it, but, I don't know why, mommy doesn't agree. Mommies, I say, are very stubborn.

The hatred grew stronger with age. My mom would run behind me with a glass of milk every single day. She tried to feed me plain milk, Complan, Horlicks, Bournvita, Boost, etc but I wouldn't budge. I cried, wailed, woke up the neighbours but I refused to drink milk. One day she asked me as to why I hated milk so much. I told her, "I can smell the cow/buffalo in the milk and it stinks so horribly that my nose wants to go hide somewhere at the sight of milk". Wait a minute, does nose see? Forget it, let me continue. So, according to her, the problem was the smell. Wrong. The problem was bigger. It was the smell, the taste and the texture.

My mom couldn't cope up with the tantrum I threw on seeing milk. So, she decided to leave me and the milk alone so that we could bond over time. She was wrong. I was elated when she left me alone with the milk. I found so many new ways to dispose off the milk that my mom didn't know what method I would use next. When mom wasn't around, I would pour the milk in the sink, sometimes, in the bathroom. But she found out. I wasn't the one to give up. I found a new way to dispose it off. I would go feed the milk to our "Sapota/ Chikoo" tree. Believe me, I am responsible for the ever sweet, most tasty fruits we get every year from that tree. I fed it the nutrition it wanted, depriving myself of it. I am so proud of my sacrifice.

Mom stopped telling me to drink milk as I grew older. She started giving me curd, buttermilk, ice creams, milkshakes, flavoured milk as substitutes which I enjoyed. I hated only plain milk you see.  Only if she had thought of all this before, she would have freed herself from so much hassle.

Present day situation is no different. They say "In life, opposites attract". It is true. My husband loves milk. I can't appreciate the fact for reasons you already know. But, he hates fruit. So, now we have found a way where both of us drink milk and eat fruit without cribbing - thanks to milkshake. I drink milkshake thinking it has fruits and my husband drinks milkshake thinking it has milk. It is all about perception you see.

P.S. : I have no idea why there is no connection between the various paragraphs of this post. *Realises that it is the same with all her posts and smirks.*
